INFORMATION FOR AFTER SURGERY

-     You will go to the post-surgery floor after leaving the recovery room.  Have your family wait there and I will speak with them after leaving surgery and answer any questions regarding your surgery.

-     Most likely, you will not have anything to eat for 24 hours.  I know this will be difficult, but it is extremely important to allow time for the bowel to recover and to decrease gas pain.

-     You will have an IV until you are stable on liquids.  This is to prevent dehydration and allow your body to receive calories.

-     If your surgery involves a bladder repair you will have a catheter placed during surgery and will remain in the bladder between 5 – 7 days and removed in the office at that time.  If your surgery does not involve a bladder repair it will be removed the morning after surgery when you are better able to void on your own.

-     You will have a pump to administer pain medication.  The pump will keep you from waiting a long period for pain medication administration.  When you begin oral medication, we will discontinue the pump.

-     You will have compression boots on your legs to prevent development of clots and these boots will be taken off whenever you are allowed to be up out of bed.

-     You will be in the hospital about 2 – 3 days.  This, of course, depends upon the procedure and any complications.
